Interviewed by a Fox, For a Parody of Vampires

When I wrote a parody of Twilight vampires, I never expected to get interviewed by a fox. In the virtual world of Second Life, I did two book readings and was interviewed by veteran reporter, Bixyl Shuftan. Bixyl is a stylishly dressed fox from his shiny shoes to his jaunty hat.

See the Interview below. The full trilogy of "Twilight of the Star Vampires" is free for a limited time (until 12/30/13) on Amazon. You don't need a Kindle to read it, as Amazon gives free kindle software.

Interview With Talia Sunsong, Author of "Twilight of the Star Vampires"

A friend in Second Life media recently told me about Talia Sunsong (taliasunsong), whom had written a science-fiction parody: "Twilight of the Star Vampires." She had been at book readings, and giving out links to where one could get the stories.

Today is the last day for free for book 1, then book 2 will be free for 5 days. It's a trilogy. I'm giving a book reading today at 2pm at Open Books at Four Bridges. You don't need a kindle to read it, as Amazon gives free kindle software.

I met up with Talia, Paula Sunsong in real life, at Open Books between readings. She was in a happy mood, as friends of hers had "really whipped up some magic. My book is #1 in my category, parody."

"So how long have you been writing?" I asked her. Talia answered, "I started writing at the age of 10, hoping to become a novelist.

Why Give Away Books for Free?

  • Those of us that are starting out novelists sometimes give books away so people can know about us. Self published authors do not have large bankrolls to advertise, like a publishing company does. I worked for Times-Mirror. They own the Los Angeles Times and other books and magazines. Times Mirror has an army of salespeople. Most self published authors have just themselves or good hearted people they know in person or through social media.

  • By giving away a book for free, an author can generate buzz, get people to notice their writing. Some say it's not a good idea to give away books for free. I respect people's opinion on going either way on free or not. I give away my books for free for a few days. I like giving it as a holiday gift. It is also a gift to me. I hope people download it, enjoy it, and leave a review on Amazon, as that helps beginning self published authors. Thanks!

Excerpts:

Edward, Star Vampire:
One of the Trade Federation tanks targeted the Queen’s group, and moved towards them.

“There’s the Queen, get her,” snapped the Trade Federation tank commander.

“Run, your highness,” said the Nabiscko General Panache seeing the tank veering towards them.

Queen Alldolla tried to pick up her heavy velvet skirts and run. The tank sped up and gave chase. In moments it was almost upon the Queen’s entourage. The general and advisors scattered. The Queen tripped on her skirt.

The tank bore down on her. It was only a few feet away.

“Stop! You could hit the Nabiscko Queen. We are ordered to capture, not kill,” said the tank commander to the driver.

“Sorry commander,” said the driver. “We can’t stop quickly.”

“Get back!” yelled Edward. Just before the tank would have hit the Queen, Edward leaped in front of her. Shoving his arm out, he stopped the vehicle with one hand, crumpling in the tank’s side.

Alldolla gasped, staring in disbelief at Edward, and at the damage he had done to the metal side of the tank.

Excerpt: The Jetti Council and Manikin Stywalker

“You cannot fear and be a Jetti knight,” said Yodama. “Fear leads to hate, hate leads to suffering, suffering leads to founding a new religion, which leads to fame and fortune as a TV evangelist, which leads to embarrassment in the press as they reveal your naughty, secret sex life.”

“Sounds good to me,” said Manikin. “I’d like a naughty, secret sex life.”

“Hmmm. Come Jetti Council members,” said Yodama gesturing. The Jetti council huddled together to decide Manikin’s fate. After a few moments of hushed discussion, they came to the conclusion that they too would like a naughty, secret sex life and that Manikin fit right in.

“Train him, you will, Obegone,” said Yodama. “But if he turns out to be an evil Jetti, that makes a Death Star and wipes out a planet, we’ll blame you.”

Excerpt: Spocko, Vampire Vullcan of the Vulcanturi:

“Welcome Spocko to the Temple of Pure Logic,” said T’Pow. “Our ancestors cast out their animal passions on this very soil.”

Spocko looked down, and imagined an orgy of writhing, naked, Vullcan bodies.
“No, no, I mean gave up passionate emotions,” said T’Pow shaking her head. Her telepathy evidently was working well and she was reading Spocko’s mind. “The men always make that mistake.” T’Pow eyed Spocko evilly as one last image of a Vullcan orgy crossed his mind. “No I don’t look like that naked,” said T’Pow, “and I’m not that flexible.”

The Vullcan priests smirked, and then quickly changed to an emotionless expression as T’Pow glared at them.

“By casting out emotions, they saved our race from ourselves,” continued T’Pow. “They attained the ultimate of pure logic and the ecstasy of pure logic. Spocko, you have achieved much over the years and proven yourself exceptional. You have cleansed yourself of dirty emotions. You have proven yourself worthy to join us. Come. Receive the symbolic necklace of Pure Logic.”

Excerpt: Vampires Anonymous:

“We’re here for you,” said William. “Let’s close the Vampire Anonymous meeting, then meet at the spaceport to plan our strategy to find your daughter. Please, everyone stand and say the serenity prayer.”

The circle of vampires stood and held hands. They chanted together.
“Universe, grant me the serenity to not bite somebody’s head off, even if they deserve it, except to protect ourselves and others from harm, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

Excerpt:

Aboard the Dearth Star, Luck was led into the cavernous throne room of the Emperor. The walls, floors, and stairs were all painted black. He stumbled over the dark stairs in the poorly lit room. “Geez, is everything black in here? I’m going to sue if I twist my ankle.”

“Come here, boy,” said Emperor Palpitate. “From here you will see the final destruction of your Alliance and your insignificant rebellion.” Palpitate indicated a window.

Luck peered out the window. “I don’t see anything.”

“Look closer.”

Luck pressed his nose against the glass. “Nope, I still don’t see anything.”

The Emperor moved closer to the window. “There it is. Those dots are fighting spaceships.”

“Those dots are the final destruction of the Alliance, and my insignificant rebellion? It’s not that impressive.”

“Oh, for the love of god, Cater, give us some binoculars!”

A hole opened in Cater’s helmet, and binoculars rose out. Ten minutes later, Palpitate, Cater and Luck were still arguing which dots were fighting spaceships, stars or just dirt on the windows.

“Don’t you want your light saber?” Palpitate patted the shiny handle of Luck’s light saber. “Isn’t the hate swelling in you now?”

“No, that’s just gas.” Luck patted his stomach. The Denebian slime burgers were coming back up on him.

Emperor Palpitate held his nose. “Take your Jetti weapon,” Palpitate said in a nasal tone. “Use it. I am unarmed. Strike me down with it. Give into your anger.”

“I’m not angry,” said Luck.

“Sure you are,” said the Emperor.

“No I’m not.”

“Yes, you are.”

“NO, I’m not.”

“YES, you are.”

“Sez you! But what would you know--your mother dresses you funny. I’m not angry,” yelled Luck.

Emperor Palpitate looked down at his black robe. Cater had picked it out, saying it was the latest in villain haute couture fashion. Palpitate felt more hate culture than haute couture.

“Damn it, you are angry,” said Palpitate. “And my mother, God bless her soul, dressed me just fine, unlike Cater.” Palpitate glared at Cater, then back to Luck. “With each passing moment, you make yourself more my servant.”

“No!” Luck crossed his arms over his chest and glared at Palpitate.

“It is unavoidable. It is your destiny. You, like your father, are now MINE!” Palpitate chuckled, but as he was still holding his nose, it came out like honks.

“As you can see, my young apprentice, your friends have failed,” said Palpitate. “Your fleet is lost, and your friends on the planet will not survive. There is no escape, my young apprentice. The Rebellion will die, as will your avatar in your favorite video game. Good. I can feel your anger. I am mostly defenseless. Take your weapon and strike me down with all your hate.”

“Neither my friends nor my favorite video game character will die!” Luck reached with the farce to draw his light saber to him. His hand vibrated with the effort and sweat broke out on his forehead. The saber sat there.

Palpitate coughed awkwardly “Oh, here, just take it,” he said and handed the light saber to Luck.

Luck fired up his light saber as Cater strode boldly up.

“Prepare to be taught a hard lesson, Luck,” said Cater smirking under his mask. He cut the air with his light saber, aiming with deadly accuracy at Luck.

Exerpt:

“Open the door to Princess Lela’s cell,” said Cater to the guard. Cater stomped loudly in. On the bunk sat Princess Lela, carefully coiling her hair into bun shapes on each side of her head. Cater shook his head. Kids these days with their fad hairstyles.

“I hope you find our accommodations adequate,” snickered Cater as he stood towering over Lela.

“Yes, thank you.” Princess Lela said with no hint of sarcasm. “The guards have been very kind.”

“Really? You like eating cold mush three meals a day?”

“I was sick of my low carbohydrate diet.”

“You like sleeping on a rock hard bed.”

“It’s good for my back.”

“You don’t mind the 24 hour security camera focused on you.”

“Oh, I did that before, for my webcast. It got high ratings.”

“Hmm, maybe I should move in here if it’s so comfortable,” said Cater putting his chin in his hand, and looking around the cell. He could add some comfy throw pillows and a breakfast nook. Plus, he could store his action figure collection above the security camera. Cater shook his head and focused on the task at hand. He leaned menacing over Lela.

“Tell me where the rebel base is, or I will force you to move from this great prison cell to a luxury apartment with a soft bed.”

“Tempting, but no,” said Lela.

“Come now, Lela. If you don’t tell me, Darkin will use electricity on your legs.”

“I’ve already done that to get rid of leg hair,” said Lela.

Cater looked surprised. “Does that work?” He looked down at his legs. Would VQ, Villain Quarterly, like his legs better if they were bald? It might work better with his Roman mini tunic outfit.

Returning to the interrogation, Cater looked back at Lela. “Well, if you’re used to electricity on your legs, then Darkin will use electricity on your face!”

“I already do that for wrinkles. Haven’t you heard of Suzanne Somers’ Facemaster?”

“No, but I use her Thighmaster.

“I can tell.”

“Thanks.” Cater swelled with pride. It was worth it to spend hours working on his inner thighs. “Okay then, if the electricity doesn’t work, then Darkin will pour hot wax over you. You’ll talk when it hits your crotch.”

Lela started to say something.

“Wait, let me guess,” said Cater. “You’ve already done that.”

“To clean up my bikini line. Bathing suits are so tiny nowadays.”

“I know,” said Cater going dreamy eyed inside of his mask.

“Lord Cater,” said the guard. “Darkin texted us a message asking if you have the location of the rebel base.”

Cater turned to the guard outside. “She is stubborn, bring in the Convince-o-droid!”

“Not the Convince-o-droid, sir, it’s too terrible,” said the guard going pale. “She’s a lady.”

“Send the droid in, or else I’ll use it on you.”

“Yes, sir, immediately.”

A strange humming noise echoed down the corridor, and became louder as it came closer. Lela looked towards her cell door. A hovering round metal robot floated in. Lela’s eyes zoomed in on the huge syringe in its cruel metal hand.

“Intimidating, isn’t it,” said Cater. “Now tell me where the rebel base is or feel the droid’s sting.”

Lela backed away from the syringe, until she was against the cold cell wall. She could go no further.

“I don’t know where the rebel base is!”

“Inject!” yelled Cater to the Convince-o-droid. The droid rushed towards Lela.

Writing is in Layers

I had my first book reading today. The host asked me about writing, and writing on different levels for different audiences. It is a good point. Writing is in layers, from the surface entertainment down to the deeper layers of human psychology, relationships and social commentary.

Readers can choose to look at the surface layer when they want light entertainment. As they are drawn into the book, they can delve the deeper layers, and relate the human experiences in the book to their own, even if the characters are robots or aliens.

The book reading host asked me, what does it take to write? How much education should you have? I'm glad I was able to attend two major universities (University of California, Berkeley and the University of Illinois). Creativity can come with or without education. Education helps you grow, but we all have a voice. We are all born with our own unique genius.

Make sure to sing your song,

Paula Sunsong
